Rhinoplasty or a “nose job,” is the most popular facial plastic surgery procedures requested by California men and women. The only plastic surgery the rhinoplasty is second to is breast augmentation surgery. The nose rests prominently in the center of the face and serves both aesthetic and functional purposes. For most patients, a deformity of the nose causes breathing problems. Abnormalities of the nose may be congenital or inherited and can be caused by trauma or prior surgery. This may attract unwanted attention and distract from the natural beauty of your face.
When a nose is out of proportion with other facial features, deformed by a nasal bump, or is too large, these abnormalities may attract unwanted attention and distract from natural harmony of the face. This surgery is the most challenging of all facial plastic surgery procedures, requiring significant skill and experience. Patients must trust their face to a facial plastic surgeon who has extensive experience in rhinoplasty. Dr. Mitchell Blum is a highly trained Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon proficient in altering the structure and appearance of the nose with rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping surgery.
Healthy men, women, and teens looking to improve the appearance and/or function of their nose may be excellent candidates for rhinoplasty or nose reshaping. Younger patients may be appropriate candidates based on several factors, including physical and emotional maturity. During a consultation, an experienced Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon like Dr. Mitchell Blum will work with you to help determine the best course of action that will deliver the most appealing results.
Rhinoplasty surgery may be performed with moderate sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s preference and age. When performed on younger children rhinoplasty may be carried out in a hospital setting. For those patients who need a small correction, the treatment may be performed non-surgically in Dr. Mitchell Blum’s office under local anesthesia.
Dr. Mitchell Blum uses only the most advanced rhinoplasty techniques. As each nose is unique in both appearance and function, the rhinoplasty procedure and technique are tailored to each patient’s individual aesthetic and functional needs. Small incisions, hidden under the nasal tip or within the nose, allow access to the cartilage and bone responsible for the shape and function of the nose. These structures are carefully adjusted to achieve the desired appearance and function. Sutures are used to close the incisions and a small external splint is placed. Scarring is minimal and the sutures are securely hidden underneath the skin.
Nose reshaping is performed on an outpatient basis. Most patients return home a few hours after surgery. Length of recovery time depends on the complexity of the procedure and varies from patient to patient. Prescription pain medication is usually only required for the first few days. Mild discomfort, bruising, or swelling lasts 7 to 10 days. Most patients are able to return to work, school, or other daily activities within about one week. Avoidance of contact sports is recommended for about one month after surgery. Dr. Mitchell Blum reduces bruising and recovery time with the use of homeopathic and herbal options. Detailed postoperative and aftercare instructions will be provided to each patient.
Those patients considering rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, should carefully evaluate their surgeon’s credentials and training. Dr. Mitchell Blum is one of the only Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgeons in the San Francisco Bay Area who has performed thousands of rhinoplasty surgeries, on patients from every age and background. Dr. Blum is double Board certified Head and Neck Surgeon, with extensive knowledge to deliver the best cosmetic results while safeguarding proper breathing function.
