Facial makeovers do not have to be extreme. Injectables are an excellent treatment option as there is no anesthesia needed and no down time expected. Their place in the treatment of an aging face is to reverse the effects of one of the main changes that occur as we age, volume loss. There are pockets of fat around the facial skeleton that melt away naturally as we age resulting in deepening of the nasolabial folds, the tear troughs, the mid cheek area, the corner of the mouth, the temple and the marionette lines/pre-jowl areas. Volumizers are injected deep into the areas of volume loss, correcting the gaunt look and re-establishing normal full contours to the face.
Dr. Mitchell Blum performs non-surgical facial volumizing in the office. The filler is gently injected into the treated area with a very fine needle. Minimal, if any, discomfort is experienced. In some cases, mild bruising and swelling occurs and tends to subside within one to two days. The results are immediately visible with most of the volumizer/fillers in use today and should last from 6 months to more than a year depending on the product used. Dr. Blum is a double board-certified Facial Plastic Surgeon with extensive experience with soft tissue fillers. Dr. Blu will help you choose the appropriate facial filler or volumizer for your personalized needs.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
These are the most common fillers used by far. There are several manufacturers of this molecule which is naturally occurring in our bodies. The difference between the various hyaluronic (HA) products used is in the way the molecules of HA are bound together. The most commonly used families of these products are RESTYLANE® and JUVEDERM®. Within each of these brands are several iterations that have properties that make one product good for fine lines, another for lip enhancement, another for deep volume replacement in this skinned areas and even a fourth for deep volume replacement in areas with thicker skin. Examples of these products include Restylane® L, Restylane® Lyft, Restylane® Silk, Restylane® Refyne, Restylane® Defyne, Juvéderm® Vollure XC, Juvéderm® Voluma XC, and Juvéderm® Ultra XC.
Radiesse® is comprised of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel. Calcium is a naturally occurring mineral found in our bones so the risks of an allergic reaction or similar adverse side effects are minimal. Its uses are very similar to the hyaluronic acid fillers.
Sculptra Aesthetic is FDA approved in the U.S. and has been used worldwide since 1999. Sculptra Aesthetic contains a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, which is a biocompatible, biodegradable substance that is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body and commonly found in dissolvable stitches. Technically, this substance is a volumizer, not a filler. It works by attracting collagen cells in the areas injected and over a course of several months and two or three treatments it will increase the volume of tissue erasing mid face volume loss and softening nasolabial lines. The effect lasts a lot longer than the Radiesse or the hyaluronic acid fillers and is appropriate for large, deep areas of volume loss.
